There is no native or direct feature to automatically sync or email chat messages from standard consumer Skype to your email.
The idea of syncing chat messages directly to an email inbox stems from legacy enterprise configurations—specifically Skype for Business (formerly Lync)—which automatically saved chats to an Outlook folder called “Conversation History.” Consumer Skype has never supported this continuous, automated email syncing. Furthermore, Microsoft retired the standard Skype application in May 2025, completely changing how past data must be handled.
To access, back up, or preserve your Skype chat histories before they are permanently cleared, use the official manual methods provided by Microsoft. 1. Manual Backup: Export and Email Chat Data
To back up your entire historical record of chats and shared media, request a data package directly from Microsoft’s cloud servers. Request Data: Go to the official Skype Data Export Portal.
Select Data Type: Check the boxes for Conversations, Files, or both.
Submit Request: Click Submit request. The system will generate your data package, which may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.
Download: Once ready, download the compressed file (usually in .tar format) to your local machine.
Send via Email: Extract the archive using unzipping software. You can manually forward specific text blocks, files, or the entire archive package to your personal email account for permanent off-site storage.
Note: Microsoft has extended the window to download your historical data from the portal until June 2026. Unsaved data will be permanently wiped after this deadline. 2. Transitioning Data: Syncing to Microsoft Teams Free
Microsoft’s official replacement track for consumer Skype users involves transitioning directly into Microsoft Teams Free. This process lets you retain access to your contact directories and historic cloud data.
